Error, (in plots:-pointplot) incorrect specification of points data

Error, (in plots:-pointplot3d) incorrect specification of points data

Error, (in plots/pointplot) incorrect first argument

Description These errors occur when the first argument to plots[pointplot] or plots[pointplot] is not a set of points of numeric values specified in the proper format.  For the correct syntax, see the plots[pointplot] and plots[pointplot3d] help pages.

Examples

Example 1

 > $\mathrm{with}\left(\mathrm{plots}\right):$

The variable $x$ is undefined:

 > $\mathrm{pointplot}\left(\left[\left[1,2\right],\left[2,x\right],\left[3,8\right]\right]\right);$

Solution:

Defining the variable fixes this error.

 > $x≔5$
 ${x}{:=}{5}$ (2.1)
 > $\mathrm{pointplot}\left(\left[\left[1,2\right],\left[2,x\right],\left[3,8\right]\right]\right);$

Example 2

Lowercase $\mathrm{pi}$is used instead of uppercase $\mathrm{Pi}.$

 > $\mathrm{with}\left(\mathrm{plots}\right):$
 > $\mathrm{pointplot}\left(\left[\left[1,2\right],\left[2,4\right],\left[\mathrm{pi},8\right]\right]\right)$

Solution:

Using uppercase corrects the error.

 > $\mathrm{pointplot}\left(\left[\left[1,2\right],\left[2,4\right],\left[\mathrm{Pi},8\right]\right]\right)$

You can also use the $\pi$ symbol from the Common Symbols palette.
