AISC Steel Shapes Data

Back to Portal

The MapleCloud contains a package with the AISC Shapes v14.1 database of physical properties for standard steel members. These properties can be for structural steel design calculations.

•

Physical properties, when appropriate, have units; these are propagated through calculations

•

The package offers data for all standard AISC steel shapes, including W, S, HP, C, MC, L, WT, MT, ST, 2L, HSS and PIPE types

•

Live calculations and documentation can be captured in a Maple worksheet

This application, for example, is a design calculation for a simply supported beam using AISC design codes.

Typical Calculations

Note: You will need to install the AISC Shapes package from the MapleCloud to re-execute these calculations.

What is the mass of a 20 ft W8X21 beam?

Mass per unit length

(1.1)

Hence for a 20 ft beam, the total mass is

(1.2)

Given a W16x57 A992 steel beam, what is the plastic moment?

Yield stress of A992 steel

Plastic section modulus

(1.3)

Hence the plastic moment is

Example Data for a W Beam

The geometry of a W beam is illustrated below

Specifically, the dimensions of a W beam of subtype W44X335 are
