Maplesoft
Launches the Maple™ Toolbox for MATLAB® Combining
the best in symbolic and numeric computation to develop
mathematical solutions and perform in-depth analysis
of the results. With this toolbox, Maplesoft offers a technical
computing solution that is tightly integrated with MATLAB, providing
direct access to all the commands, variables, and functions of
each product while working in either environment.
The Maple Toolbox for MATLAB consists of two components, Maple
10 – the most powerful and intuitive tool for solving complex
mathematical problems and creating rich, executable technical documents
- and the Maple-MATLAB Connector. The Maple-MATLAB Connector is
an add-on to Maple 10 that provides a two-way link between Maple
and MATLAB, enabling users to define variables in either environment
and use them in the other.

2006 - Episode 4: Science of the Better
In this episode Tom talks with Dr.
Janos Pinter about
how to optimize decisions under resource constraints,
the early days of computing, and his thoughts about studying
in a communist country. He joins us via telephone from
Halifax, Nova Scotia. Eithne Murray stops by again to
discuss the fascinating world of programming in Maple;
and we have also information about using the new Intel-based
Mac port of Maple and a new e-book on understanding and
computing derivative securities.

2006 - Episode 5: Building a Better Mousetrap
Tom Lee sits down with Dr.
John McPhee, the inventor
of DynaFlexPro, in his office at the University of Waterloo
to discuss dynamic models of physical systems, difficulties
one might encounter when commercializing a product, and
his work on modeling the piano hammer action. Paul Goossens
joins us via telephone from the American Control Conference
to talk about DynaFlexPro and
other engineering products; and we bring you an interesting

Maplesoft continues to receive much
press. Recently there has been coverage in BusinessWeek
Online, and Design News. There were also numerous publications
that covered the story about Maple support for the Intel-based
Mac platform including Macworld, MacMinute, The MacObserver
and Applelinks. There was a piece about BlockBuilder for
Simulink in Scientific Computing and our feature article
is a review of the Global Optimization Toolbox in Scientific
Computing.

life got a lot simpler not only on the purely computational end, but also for
understanding

Upon entering several simple trigonometric functions, GOT correctly computed
the global (not local) extremum and, as an option, displayed the results on the
plot. This can be accomplished easily with the command line or the Global Optimization
Assistant. This Assistant is a very useful dialog box that permits easy entry
of objective functions as well as constraints and bounds.”

Waterloo (Ont.)-based Maplesoft sells a software application, Maple 10 that highly
sophisticated funds and financial institutions might employ in making their investment
choices. Also used by engineering and design outfits, the program is a way to
inject "hard-core mathematical operations" such as differentiation,
optimization, factorization, or sensitivity analysis into a firm's investing
models, says Chief Executive Jim Cooper.”

Math Software’s Arch Enemy: The Number 2 Pencil
“When Maplesoft President Jim Cooper reviewed the results of a recent
survey his company conducted to find out what calculation tools engineers use,
he was floored. “We found out that our biggest competition isn’t
a rival software company, it’s the old classic: pencil and paper. To a
great extent engineers today are doing math calculations the same way I did them
20 years ago—looking up constants in printed reference materials and doing
hand calculations. We didn’t expect that,” the former aerospace engineer
says.”
